In App Purchases When Previous Version Was Paid With Trial

I’m trying to finish up the Windows Phone 8 version of Network Dashboard and I’ve run into a bit of a conundrum: The Windows Phone 7 version of Network Dashboard was a $0.99 app with a free trial, but I’d like to make the Windows Phone 8 version free with in app purchases to open up additional functionality.

This idea brings up a couple of questions that I can’t seem to find the answer to:

  1. I have about 12,000 paid customers for Network Dashboard. If I change the app to free with in app purchase, how do I give the previously paid users the full functionality?
  2. Can I specify different pricing for the Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 8 versions of the app if they are published them with the same App ID?

I don’t want to screw over any customers that have already paid by making them pay again for the Windows Phone 8 version to get the full version.

Anyone have any thoughts on the best way to proceed?

    Hi George,

I don’t think having two different pricing models for the same app is possible. That would be very confusing for the users.

My question is: What is the added value of doing In app purchase VS Trial?

I love your app, and I would gladly pay another 99 cents for a wp8 version. Otherwise the wp7 that has already been paid for, will continue to work. I see them as two different apps. Again, I’d pay for it.

Thanks, Patrick! The WP8 version will be out soon. I’m just finishing it up with some final touches. I’m going to make the in app purchase to get the additional tile styles free for a while so previous paid users can get it.

You could offer them a token, sent to their MS account, that would unlock the full version of Network Dashboard for WP8.
